Here’s Why Dylan Larkin Doesn’t Want to Be Traded to the Canadiens

Dylan Larkin received a warm welcome at the Bell Centre on Saturday, but winning over the Detroit Red Wings forward may only be part of the challenge for the Montreal Canadiens.

According to TVA Sports reporter Renaud Lavoie, the reluctance surrounding a potential move to Montreal comes from Larkin’s inner circle. Speaking during Saturday’s game, Lavoie suggested that Larkin himself has nothing against the Canadiens. Instead, it is those closest to him who still need convincing about Canada.

Canadiens fans certainly did their part to make Montreal an appealing destination. Multiple “We want Larkin” chants broke out during the game against the Red Wings, making it clear that many fans would welcome him in a Canadiens jersey.

The reception did not go unnoticed. After the game, Larkin praised the Montreal crowd, describing the Bell Centre as “the best atmosphere in hockey.” His comments showed an appreciation for the fans, although that enthusiasm does not, by itself, indicate a willingness to approve a trade.

Larkin’s trade protection remains a significant factor in determining his next destination. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that the list of teams Larkin would accept a trade to had grown to approximately eight. Among the reported destinations were the Minnesota Wild, Florida Panthers, Vegas Golden Knights, Dallas Stars, Tampa Bay Lightning, Colorado Avalanche and Washington Capitals, all American teams. Montreal was not among those named.

At this point, the central question is no longer whether the Canadiens want Larkin, but whether Larkin wants to join the Canadiens and play in Canada. Montreal’s interest can only take the situation so far: before any potential deal can move forward, he must be willing to approve the destination.
