In what was a somewhat-tense exchange between the Habs and Lane Hutson, a deal has finally been reached to keep the 2024-25 Calder Trophy winner in Montreal.
Early Monday morning, defenceman Lane Hutson would sign an eight-year, $70.8 million dollar contract extension to stay with the Canadiens through to the 2033-34 season. With other key contributors like Cole Caufield already locked into long-term contracts with the team, securing Lane Hutson's signature is a huge boost to Montreal's long-term ambitions, especially as they look to cement their place in the Eastern Conference playoff picture.
On the sudden turnaround in negotiations, The Athletic columnist Pierre LeBrun noted on a Twitter post that the "Hutson deal started to come together Saturday going into Sunday {...} Bottom line is that Lane Hutson didn't want his situation to be a distraction for the team all year. Wanted to get it done."
Last year, Hutson took the NHL by storm. The Holland, Michigan product scored 66 points in his rookie campaign, with several multi-game point-scoring streaks contributing to the huge point tally. He also secured his first point in the 2025-26 NHL season this past Saturday against the Chicago Blackhawks, scoring an assist in a 3-2 win.
The Canadiens will trot Lane Hutson and Co. out for the first time since the defencemen signed his extension when the team plays their home opener Tuesday night against the Seattle Kraken. Puck drop at the Bell Centre is set for 7:00 pm ET.
